About 150 New York National Guard soldiers are in Arizona to help stem the flow of immigrants illegally crossing the border from Mexico. They are the first troops from New York deployed for Operation Jump Start, the federal border security program.
The New York National Guard has done a lot of security work — especially since 9/11, providing security at nuclear power plants and airports for example. The New York soldiers are primarily armed infantrymen, though they will be joined by medical and administrative staff. The troops will be under the command of the National Guard's Company A, based in Geneseo. Some of the infantry is from Batavia. The soldiers had been scheduled to be at Fort Drum for their annual two-week Guard training.
