Subject: Patriot Guard Riders to Sponsor Poker Run Benefiting Wounded Soldiers
The Western New York members of the Patriot Guard Riders are sponsoring a Poker Run with proceeds to benefit soldiers wounded in action. The Patriot Guard Riders was formed by motorcycle enthusiasts to provide support to families of fallen heroes. According to Laurie M., a Patriot Guard member, the Poker Run will provide backpacks filled with necessities to soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Many of the soldiers arrive at the military hospitals with nothing more than the uniforms they had on when they injured. The back packs contain items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, tee shirts, and calling cards so that they can speak with their loved ones.”
Laurie is also a regional manager for Soldiers’ Angels. “Soldiers’ Angels provide the backpacks and support to the wounded soldiers and their families” says Laurie. Formed in 2003 by Patti Patton-Bader, Soldiers’ Angels send care packages and letters to deployed troops with little contact from home. Soldiers’ Angels also provide voice activated laptop computers to wounded soldiers. “These laptops allow soldiers with various injuries to connect with friends and family and with their buddies still deployed. They give them a sense of independence and help speed the recovery” says Laurie. Captain Chuck Ziegenfuss was one of the first recipients of the special laptops and will be the guest speaker at the poker run.
The run date is September 3, 2006. Registration is from 10-11 am at the Palmyra VFW, Route 31, Palmyra NY. The Entrance fee is $20 ($5 for an additional passenger).
